“Photography is a marvelous discovery, a science that has attracted the greatest intellects, an art that excites the most astute minds – and one that can be practiced by any imbecile…. Photographic theory can be taught in an hour, the basic technique in a day. But what cannot be taught is the feeling for light.. It is how light lies on the face that you as artist must capture. Nor can one be taught how to grasp the personality of the sitter. To produce an intimate likeness rather than a banal portrait, the result of mere chance, you must put yourself at once in communication with the sitter, size up his thoughts and his very character.” -Nadar (Gaspard Felix Tournachon) 1856

“Get your lighting and exposure correct at the start and both the developing and printing can be practically automatic.” – Edward Weston, 1921

Quotes by Joey Kelley:

“If you look back at your life and honestly don’t have any regrets – you haven’t lived. You’ve just been alive.” -Joey Kelley

“Generational differences in how we consume content will be the greatest influence in the next few years on books, magazines, video, and photography. People gathering in front of X device to watch something at X time will disappear; our lives will not be locked into the schedule dictated by content providers.” -Joey Kelley, 10/19/10

“There are moments where life seems to take a moment to breathe. Moments of stillness – contentment – peace. May one of these moments find you each day – and may you recognize it for what it is – A chance to stop and live in the moment and be one with what is around you.” -Joseph T. “Joey” Kelley, 4/27/15

Upon someone Graduating College: “Congrats! College is a milestone in ones life – from here on out – you’ll be judged by what you do with your education and drive. Take what you’ve learned – mix it with your personality – and come out with a way to make the world better in a way that is worthy of your time and and your talent. Never stop learning – never stop growing – never stop working to make your life what you want. Surround yourself with people that help you and are a positive light in your life. Leave behind those that drag you down and soar to reach your full potential. Keep your eyes on your long term goals and don’t let short term concerns sidetrack you from your long term goals. Be yourself – and don’t apologize to anyone for being your own person.” -Joseph T. “Joey” Kelley, 4/26/16

The interest has ebbed and flowed over the years, but has evolved into a passion for photography, history, literature and preservation that has become a driving force in my life.

Coming out of high school, the news that the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad stirred an interest in knowing that the railroad would soon be gone and drove me to document its last days. This turned into a passion for railroad photography that continues to this day.

On the literature side, in 2017 the first book ever written on the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad was published. You can find a link to it under Books at the top of this page. The next project, started in 2018, is the Maine Line Magazine (also linked at the top) and that is a continuation of the Bangor and Aroostook's employee magazine, reborn as an online e-mag all about the railroads history.

Preservation of railroad artifacts and equipment has become a family tradition.

The story and images tell the rich story of a railroad that was intimately tied to the communities it served and is a must read for anyone with an interest in the history of New England’s railroad or Downeast Maine. At just $14.95 it’s also an inexpensive addition to your bookshelf. Well worth the price.” -Justin Franz

An unforgettable ride through the 150 year history of the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad. Chartered in 1867, the railroad’s original charter was to run all the way from the Maine coastal town of Belfast, to the shores of Moosehead Lake in Greenville. Cut off from building outside of Waldo County, the 33 mile railroad was owned by the towns it served. The railroad survived two world wars, increased competition from trucks, the erosion of the poultry industry and went into the passenger excursion business to survive. The only railroad in the United States to import a Swedish steam locomotive in the 1990s, the Belfast and Moosehead Lake was the home of the largest operating steam locomotive in the state of Maine for nearly two decades. Currently operated as a non-profit, this railroad survives through dedicated volunteers. Entering its 150th year in 2017, this railroad is the only railroad in the State of Maine still using its original name.

If you're anything like me - that is a question that is asked both by others and by yourself. In my case - it isn't easy to answer. Philosophical discussions aside, I think that the old term renaissance man: a man with extraordinarily broad and comprehensive knowledge applies. Here is a short list of things that I do either professionally or as a hobby: Author - Photographer - IT Guy - Magazine Editor - Landlord - Gearhead - Historian - Model railroader - Video producer - Railroad Conductor - Railroad Equipment Operator - Student - Commercial Driver - Lord Joey of Scotland - Driver and Cat Daddy

Who am I? I'm me. Perhaps that is the best way to say it.
